SUNY ESF Newcomb Sells Mansion

The mansion, called Masten House, was owned and restored by SUNY and used for educational purposes for a while.  It was also part of plans for hikers heading in the south of the high peaks.  But none of this worked out and it has been sold to a private owner.

New Toboggan Chute Opens in Lake Placid

The new water front park in Keesville along a former industrial site.  It was funded with $280k from a NC REDC grant.

New I-87 Visitor Center at Exit 18 to Open in 2017-8

The new visitor center near exit 18 will open in late 2017 or in 2018.  It will be at an existing rest stop.

Clinton & Franklin Counties Receive State Waterfront Revitalization Grants

The Environmental Protection Fund awarded Clinton County and Franklin County with $490,000 to distribute to projects for waterfront revitalization or other tourism amenities in destination master plans.

Keene Footbridge Restores Walking Loop

A 2 mile walking loop along the East Branch of the Ausable had been key community feature bringing a healthy bit of simple outdoors exercise to many residents.  But a beauty of an old iron bridge that crossed the river upstream from the hamlet was destroyed by the flood 4 years ago.  In November 2105, a replacement footbridge funded by FEMA was opened and the town has it's loop-walk back.

$1.1m Grant for Waterfront, Stormwater, Projects

The grant will design and build a new water front park in Tupper Lake, design dam improvements in Wilmington, address culvert / stream bank issues in Keene, Jay, Hague, Chestertown and storm water projects in Lake George, Chestertown, and Warrensburg.

NYS to Add Parking and Bike Trails in Wilmington

The new Wilmington Wild Forest management plan features more parking and bike trails.

New Maps & Trail Markers for Cadyville Rec Park

The Town of Plattsburgh and Clinton County Health Department are working together to provide new signs and trial markers at Cadyville Rec Park. The new signs, maps and markers will provide better information to visitors and allow for easier use of the trails, and were designed for easy manipulation if trails are expanded in the future.

As part of Gov. Cuomo's NY Works Program the Paradox Lake Campground and Boat Launch will receive $598,000 in funding to improve user experience of the location. part of the funding will go towards paving all roads in the campground.

DEC Restoring St. Regis Mountain & Hurricane Mountain Fire Towers

To prevent removal of the towers, the sites were deemed historic and will now be restored and opened to the public. One goal is to provide information about the surrounding mountains in the towers as well as historic educational programs around the tower.

New Recreational Dock on LaChute River

A partnership between Essex County, the NYS Dept of Health Creating Healthy Places Grant, and the Kiwanis Club of Ticonderoga allowed for a new dock along the LaChute River that connects Lake George and Lake Champlain. The dock's main purpose is for easier access to the river with kayaks and canoes, but could be used for small boats too.

Lake George Waterfront $6m Rebuild Finished

The $6.3M upgrade to Lake George's beach road and waterfront park have been completed in impressively quick time. The improvements included a parking lot paved with porous asphalt, new stormwater management infrastructure, reconfigured traffic flow, and a boat launch with inspection station and boat washing.

Warren County Opens New Welcome/Information Center

The First Wilderness welcome center opened in the Smith's Restaurant building in North Creek. The center will showcase improvement projects and activities available in the surrounding communities and a staff member will be available at the center and on the Saratoga-North Creek train to provide on the spot information to visitors.

Lower Sargent Pond Trout Fishery Restoration Project

The pond, in Hamilton County, was a fine brook trout fishery years ago but was invaded by bass, perch, etc and the trout were gone.  The pond was treated and trout will be stocked in the spring.  Lake Colby was treated very successfully years ago.

The new multi-sport fields will be on the 2 capped landfills. They will accommodate larger attendance at events like the Lacrosse and Rugby gatherings.  These are big economic events for the area.

This is the put-in area for boats going into the Saranac Chain lakes ponds and streams.  It is a very heavy use point.  The work is underway as of September 2013.
