NYS Grants for 2 Drinking Water Systems

Chester will see $1m and North Elba $1.3m for drinking water system work.  The North Elba funds are for Ray Brook drinking water.

The 3 systems all exist but need major work.  Crown Point will see a grant of $1.3m.  Saranac Lake will see a grant of $4.8m.  Speculator will see a grant of $1.8m

Ti Fort Preserves Mt Defiance Land

Mt Defiance overlooks Fort Ticonderoga and that was a huge problem for the fort.  The land at the summit, site of a cannon array, has been preserved by the Fort.

Upper Saranac Lake Dam gets Emergency Repairs

The dam is near the Bartlett Carry.  Major repairs were required following damage in the spring.

Plattsburgh Airport Work Completed

The expansion of the terminal and related projects are now complete.  The EAS funded flights are now to Washington Dulles, via United.  Flights to Boston ended.

NYS Bans Some Roadside Parking at Roaring Brook Falls

NYS has closed a lot of unsafe roadside parking at Roaring Brook Falls.  This is a trail head for Giant and all the AMR trails.  Parking has been overwhelmed and unsafe.

DEC Opens New My Van Ho Trail

The new trail shares parking with the VanHo complex where hikers park on crowded weekends.  It takes some pressure of Cascade by offering a shorter and beautiful hike from the same beginning point.

DEC Tries Shuttle Bus for Cascade in October 2018

Hikers were parked at Mt Van Hovenberg and taken by shuttle to the Cascade trail.  DEC says it was successful.

New Waterflea in Lake Champlain

The new bug is the fishhook waterflea.  It is related to the spiny waterflea which has spread to 12 interior lakes but was not detected in Lake Champlain in 2017.

ROOST Begins Workshop to Inform Hikers

ROOST has conducted its first workshop for first line tourism workers about how to properly advise hikers.  Hotels workers and retail shop people are the first to attend.  The idea is to make it easy for visitors to get good advice from people they are likely to encounter.
